I remember war I remember fear Sirens howling ‘Planes circling, dropping bombs Families sheltering, losing their homes.
I remember hunger Shortages of food Shops with long queues I remember guns firing, shooting at ‘planes Bringing them down in a mass of flames.
I remember coldness Shortages of fuel I remember darkness ‘Planes caught by a searchlight Fleeing into the blackness of the night.
Last year I met a German The same age as myself We talked about our memories Of ‘planes that threatened our lives And how we both survived
The things that we remembered Were very much the same We were enemies then Fearing each others ‘planes
But we were only children caught up in an adult game We were not to blame, no we were not to blame.
